The Dumfries & Galloway Hard of Hearing Group Are holding monthly drop-ins in Thornhill, Wigtown and Annan: The Community Centre, Thornhill 1st Wednesday of every month 10 - 12noon The Smiddy, Wigtown, 3rd Thursday every month 2 - 4pm The Bowling Club, Annan, Tuesday 23rd September 1-0 - 12 noon (every 2nd Tuesday). The group provides information and advice on hearing loss and has the support of the Sensory Loss Unit and Audiology. We also offer advice on aids which can help hearing aid users have a better quality of life e.g. doorbells,lights and loop systems for television. The exercises teach you how to lip read the various speech movements and lip patterns with the help of facial expressions and body language. There are 3 Lip Reading Classes in Dumfries & Galloway at the moment : Monday, Dalbeattie Day Centre 2-4pm. Dumfries Lip Reading group with their "Awards For All" Certificate. Dumfries & Galloway Deaf Club Meet at 26, Rae Street on the 1st Tuesday of the month from 7.00pm - 10.00pm The local branch of the National Deaf Children Society also meet on this night. Health Information in British Sign Language Several statutory agencies have produced accessible information for Deaf sign language users: •Health Rights Information Scotland has produced British Sign Language versions of their leaflets “ o The NHS and You, o Making a complaint about the NHS, o Confidentiality “ Its your right, and o How to see your health records. •Scottish Intercollegiate Guidelines Network (SIGN) now has BSL versions of the following patient guidelines on DVD: o Acute coronary syndromes, o Arrhythmias, o Chronic heart failure, o Dementia, o Epilepsy in children and young people, o Lung cancer, o Stable angina, and o Prevention of cardiovascular disease. You may also know that the Scottish Consumer Council and NHS Education for Scotland have put together the website œPolish Information Plus. This website lets people find information about public services in Scotland which has been translated into Polish. There are over 200 pieces of information on this website. The Scottish Government provided the financial resources to do this. SCoD is aware that some National Council member organisations have produced health information that is available either on their website or on CD/DVD. SCoD is in the process of trying to find out what health information has been produced in Scotland for Deaf sign language users. We would like to know what your organisation has produced, when it was produced, and what your organisation/service users think are the gaps in the available information. Once this information is gathered, SCoD will write a report which will be submitted to NHS Scotland and the Scottish Consumer Council. The report will also be available on the SCoD website.
